What is a Classic Car?Elegance.Style.Sophistication.Class.Refinement.And, quite frankly, total and complete fantasy. A classic car harkens back to the days when craftsmanship was fundamental. In as many people that you talk to about what a classic is you will get as many different answers. To me a classic car was made before 1960. Today's cars, while safe, fuel-efficient, and stylish, are made out of plastic, fiberglass, tin, and light steel. Yesterday's cars weren't put together by inanimate robots; they were skillfully crafted by hard-working men and women who took pride in what rolled off the assembly line. There was no plastic or glue used to hold together vital parts, there were rivets, strong welds, nuts and bolts and screws. The seats weren't put together on a machine out of foam and plastic, but they were crafted by professional upholsterers who made seats like they were furniture in a home. Can any of today's cars bring the same dreamy-eyed look as the cars of yesterday? While there may be some future classics rolling off the showroom floor today, names such as Duesenberg, Cord, Tucker, Cadillac, LaSalle, Packard, and others still bring sighs of remembrance of "what used to be when America was America!" One of today's hard-to-get vehicles, the Chrysler PT Cruiser, is very, very popular. Why? Because its unmistakable resemblance to the panel vans of the 40s and 50s makes it a must-have item. Although it may have plastic and glue holding it together instead of steel and rivets, it stills grabs the eye. Ahh, the good old days! My own personal favorite, my 1956 Cadillac Sedan Deville, is a reminder of days long gone. On the exterior, its body is made out of steel. And there is the chrome – lots of it. The interior is more steel and chrome, rich fabric, vinyl and leather. There's a little plastic - the steering wheel rim and the gear shift knob - but it's largely "real" materials. It has enough room to fit a person six and half feet tall comfortably - front or back - with plenty of head room and knee room to spare. It drives like an old, stately gentleman. Driving down the road it says “look at me” and the heads turn and the faces smile. Many times the hands are waiving. I drive this car daily. One of the best things about having a classic is not the car itself, but the people I meet. I love seeing the expressions on people who remember the classics - especially as they look in the back seat with a glint of mischief and remembrance in their eyes. And long conversations on "the good old days when they KNEW how to build a car!" I use my classic car on a daily basis. I preview homes for sale in one, I conduct my Buyer's tours in one I attend closings in one. You may see me on the street with one of my classics. You will know its me because I always have my magnetic sign on the door and I proudly fly an American flag and a MIA-POW flag from the front bumpers. If you see me please honk and wave!! In general I drive them because to own one is great - to drive one is heaven. The ride is comfortable, the air conditioning works, and the "feel" of the vehicle is incredible.
